After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Providence third baseman said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."
Nobody was at home today as Barnhart finished the day with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.
B. Barnhart doubled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 8th.
So far this year Barnhart has hit .243 with no home runs, 23 RBIs and 61 runs scored. | | Thursday, May 30th, 1872: | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Dick Goldner | torn tricep muscle | 4 months | On DL, eligible for return (60-day DL) | | P Steve Humble | tender shoulder | 3 days | Not on DL | | P John Maddock | torn rotator cuff muscle | 3 weeks | On DL, eligible for return | | 3B Harry Lafleur | tender elbow | 6 days | On DL, eligible for return | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 34-49, .410 PCT | | Position in Division | 6th, 19.0 GB | | Record at home | 17-24, .415 PCT | | Record on the road | 17-25, .405 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-1, .667 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 9-12, .429 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 10-14, .417 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 24-35, .407 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 14-14, .500 PCT | | Record in May | 9-20, .310 PCT | | Record in June | 11-15, .423 PCT |
