| Breaking News | | Saturday, August 12th, 1871: Chicago Snaps Vondran's Streak at 31 All good things must come to an end -- and so it was today for Billy Vondran as he saw his 31-game hitting streak end. He went hitless in 5 at-bats at the hands of the Sables. It wasn't all bad for the 26-year-old center fielder and the Michigan Panthers, as they defeated Chicago 9-4 at Panthers Ballpark.
When asked about his hitting streak, a smiling Vondran laughed and said, "I guess my luck ran out today."
In 1871 Vondran has hit at a .372 clip with 161 hits, 1 home run, 40 RBIs and has scored 115 times. | | Thursday, August 10th, 1871: Fritts Goes 5-5 It was a sensational day at the plate for Charlie Fritts, but a letdown as well as the Blue Stockings dropped the game 16-12 to the Sables.
Nonetheless the New York center fielder was pure misery for the Chicago pitching staff. He left them shellshocked with 5 hits in 5 at-bats in an explosive display of hitting.
"It's always good to get a bunch of hits in a game, but you also want to win. That's the important thing," Fritts said.
The manager of the Sables told BNN reporters after the game, "Fritts put the ball into play. He really hit it hard. When you do that, you've got a pretty good chance to do some damage. And that's what happened. I feel like we threw him some pretty good pitches, but he just put some good swings on the ball."
C. Fritts singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, doubled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
In 1871 Fritts has produced 99 hits in 321 at-bats for a .308 average with 1 home run and gotten on base at a .324 clip. | | Sunday, July 30th, 1871: Bligh Gets 5 Hits William Bligh told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard."
Well, that's just what Bligh of the Milwaukee Pale Ales did against the Chicago Sables. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the Sables, who suffered a 9-3 defeat.
"Not much that I can say," offered the losing manager, "he just hammered the heck out of us."
W. Bligh hit a solo-shot off J. Prunty in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off C. Martin in the 8th.
In 1871, Bligh is hitting .343 with 5 home runs and 58 RBIs in 78 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .367 with 9 walks and 80 runs scored. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | 1B Bill Doyal | dislocated shoulder | 5 months | 11 day(s) left (60-day DL) | | 2B Tommy Gary | sprained ankle | 4 days | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 52-46, .531 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 6.0 GB | | Record at home | 25-23, .521 PCT | | Record on the road | 27-23, .540 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 3-1, .750 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 12-11, .522 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 15-10, .600 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 37-36, .507 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in May | 13-15, .464 PCT | | Record in June | 16-10, .615 PCT | | Record in July | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in August | 9-6, .600 PCT |
