His day of reckoning finally came at the hands of the Philadelphia Red Stockings, who held him without a hit in 4 at-bats. To make matters worse, they also won the ballgame 9-5.

That would be hard to believe for anyone who saw him dispose of the Red Stockings with a great 5-hit performance.
"He made it look easy," said the Philadelphia manager, who saw his team fall to the New York Blue Stockings, 12-4. "Hats off to him!"
E. Barthold singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, grounded out in the 8th and hit a three-run home run off B. Mull in the 9th.
On the season, Barthold is batting .318 with 3 home runs and 53 RBIs. He has played in 71 games. |  | Tuesday, June 18th, 1872: Darley Stretches Hit String to 25 Mike Darley's consecutive-game hitting streak has now climbed to 25 games. The New York first baseman smacked 2 hits against Brooklyn in today's game at Ballpark of Cheyenne to extend it, but he has mixed emotions about it.
After losing to the Brooklyn Atlantics, Darley told reporters, "I feel good about the streak, but don't feel good when we lose."
M. Darley flied out in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, singled in the 6th and grounded out in the 8th.
