| Breaking News | | Wednesday, June 26th, 1872: Toribio Slams 5 Hits for Denver "It was like I was hitting little league pitching," said William Toribio after his 5-hit performance against the Browns. "No offense meant to Saint Louis, but it was like I was back in little league again. I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid league park, it was Pikes Ballpark."
The Denver left fielder had a fantastic day at the plate, knocking out 5 hits in 6 at-bats and pacing his club to a 10-4 victory.
His manager elaborated after the game to the press, saying, "William worked the entire offseason on trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball and the hard work is paying off in base hits."
"That's what I'm trying to do," Toribio said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."
W. Toribio singled in the 1st, grounded out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off M. Brooks in the 9th.
Toribio is batting .317 this season in 55 games with 1 home run, 30 RBIs and 51 runs scored. He has 63 hits in 199 at-bats. | | Monday, June 24th, 1872: Hot Hitter Wins WA Award It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Western Association, but last week William Toribio of the Denver Pikes reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week.
Toribio rocked opposing pitching for a .632 average (12-19), no home runs and 5 RBIs to come away with the award.
So far this season Toribio is hitting .295 with no home runs. | | Saturday, June 22nd, 1872: Wroten Goes 5-6 Against Denver The Trojans whipped the Pikes 18-8 at Trojans Ballpark and Charlie Wroten had a big hand in the win. The Trojans right fielder came to the plate 6 times and collected 5 hits. It was a good day for Wroten and a tough day for Denver.
"I just go up there and whale away and hope it hits the barrel of the bat," he said. "There really isn't any plan."
Plan or not, Wroten delivered today -- 5-6 is outstanding in any league.
C. Wroten singled in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off D. Wishart in the 9th.
Batting .310 to date, Wroten has 1 home run and 38 RBIs. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | SS Dick Sales | strained hamstring muscle | 2 weeks | 25 day(s) left (60-day DL) | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 36-47, .434 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 16.0 GB | | Record at home | 20-21, .488 PCT | | Record on the road | 16-26, .381 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 1-6, .143 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 5-17, .227 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 5-16, .238 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 31-31, .500 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 14-14, .500 PCT | | Record in May | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in June | 11-15, .423 PCT |
