| Breaking News |  | GSL's Top Hitter for 1885 Named Tuesday, August 18th, 1885: Frank Goad of the Montreal Trappers had a fine season this year and today he accepted the Batsman of the Year Award for 1885.
The 23-year-old second baseman put up a .321 average and a .353 on-base percentage, piling up 134 hits, 25 doubles, 14 triples, 7 home runs, 84 RBIs and 76 runs scored. |  | Pitcher of the Year Award Goes to Birmingham Hurler Monday, August 17th, 1885: The Birmingham clubhouse staff referred to him as "the kid" this season. Next year John Mehaffey will have to have a new nickname. He earned it after winning the 1885 Great Southern League Pitcher of the Year Award.
Mehaffey made 52 starts this year, winning 36 and losing 15. He threw 451 innings, fanned 161, allowed 396 hits and 84 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .222 average as he logged an impressive 1.90 ERA. | | | | |
