Wednesday, August 16th, 1871: Washington Tags Independents 5 Hits
Fred Washington exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Industrials Ballpark. The Providence center fielder had a field day in the 24-3 triumph over the Cleveland Independents, finishing with a 5-7 day and a spot in the league record book.

"My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch."

Well, Washington must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.

F. Washington hit an RBI single in the 1st, grounded out in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI double in the 7th, hit an RBI single in the 8th and hit a solo-shot off J. Veale in the 8th.

Washington on the season is hitting .376 with 3 home runs. His stats include 82 RBIs and 109 runs scored.
