Tuesday, August 15th, 1871: Vulcans Manes Tosses Masterpiece
John Manes of the Pittsburgh Vulcans gave the Bisons a steady diet of fine pitches and he walked off the mound with a complete-game shutout. He blanked them 7-0 on 5 hits with a total of 1 strikeout and no walks.

The Pittsburgh manager said, "Manes was on quite a roll. He gets great late movement and he doesn't give in to the hitters."

Manes has gone 13-8 this season with an ERA of 3.78 and 13 strikeouts in 176 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .278 against him.
