Transcontinental Baseball Association News Article | | | Thursday, August 3rd, 1871: Kantor Raps Sacramento for 5 Hits Tom Kantor was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over 49ers Ballpark, collecting 5 hits, but wasn't able to win the game. He got his 15 minutes of fame and the Sacramento Associates got the 15-14 victory over the San Francisco Seals.
"Headlines and highlights are great, but it takes a lot of luster off of it because we lost the game," he expounded to the press after the game.
After the first three hits, everybody's in the ballpark was drawn to him each time Kantor stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the San Francisco catcher said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for high average is to relax, concentrate, and hit the ball where they ain't." That's exactly what he did today as Kantor finished the game with 5 hits in 7 at-bats and a line in the record book.
T. Kantor singled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th, singled in the 8th, hit a three-run home run off F. Landreneau in the 9th and flied out in the 11th.
Thus far this year Kantor has hit .322 with 3 home runs and 65 RBIs. | |
