Transcontinental Baseball Association News Article | | | Tuesday, June 18th, 1872: 6-6 Game for Toribio It was a big day with the bat for William Toribio of the Denver Pikes at Pikes Ballpark as he bashed out hit after hit after hit to defeat San Francisco 12-5.
To the press after the ballgame he modestly said, "Guys, it's just one game in a long season. I hit it hard and found some holes today. 6 hits in 6 tries. But my hits are not the big thing in the game. The victory is the important thing. That's the story."
At the end of the game Toribio had collected 6 hits in 6 at-bats and a small mention in the record book. He was happy. He had a big day with the bat. And the Pikes had won.
The beat writers were happy, too. They had their big story -- they could write about his big day with the bat.
W. Toribio singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
Toribio's current batting average stands at .294 and he has chalked up no home runs and 24 RBIs. | |
