 | Tuesday, June 18th, 1872: 6-6 Game for Toribio It was a big day with the bat for William Toribio of the Denver Pikes at Pikes Ballpark as he bashed out hit after hit after hit to defeat San Francisco 12-5. To the press after the ballgame he modestly said, "Guys, it's just one game in a long season. I hit it hard and found some holes today. 6 hits in 6 tries. But my hits are not the big thing in the game. The victory is the important thing. That's the story." At the end of the game Toribio had collected 6 hits in 6 at-bats and a small mention in the record book. He was happy. He had a big day with the bat. And the Pikes had won. The beat writers were happy, too. They had their big story -- they could write about his big day with the bat. W.
