Transcontinental Baseball Association News Article | | | Monday, June 3rd, 1872: Duquette Bashes 5 Base Hits It was a hits blitz for Jim Duquette at Cheyenne Grounds. The Cheyenne Hell-on-Wheels second baseman tore into Saint Louis for 5 hits in 6 at-bats and wrote his name into the record book. But it wasn't enough to win the game. The Saint Louis Browns swept past the Hell-on-Wheels 24-22 to ruin the day for him.
The Cheyenne manager bemoaned his pitching, saying, "We fell behind and weren't locating well. Once you get behind in the count, you have to make real good pitches, rather than good pitches, and we weren't able to do that today. Bad location was the story of the ballgame. That's why we lost the game. The Browns got too many good looks today, and we paid for it."
J. Duquette hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, grounded out in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit an RBI double in the 7th, flied out in the 8th and hit an RBI double in the 9th.
This year Duquette has socked 72 hits in 243 at-bats for a .296 average with no home runs. He is getting on base at a .303 pace and his totals also include 55 RBIs and 50 runs scored. | |
